Motivating Project Teams

Motivating Project Teams

April Showers bring May Flowers.

May is the month of celebrating abundance.  The month of May was named after the Greek Goddess Maia, who was identified as the Roman goddess of fertility.  So bearing this in mind how to you grow your team’s confidence and skills?  You have no financial rewards to give them not in these recessionary times however you need to keep them on track and focused and you want to reward the best and encourage the rest.
You need to motivate them.

Our current working environment is chaotic and success derives from your team using their full talent.  A motivated team will deliver and achieve goals.  So how do you do it?
There is no mystery to motivating teams here are a few hints.

1. Get to know them.
Determine what turns them on.  Some people like presenting and being in the forefront, others prefer detail and doing research.  Find out what they are good at, what they want to be good at and where their ambitions lie.  Explore their talents.  Tap into their creative skills and let them organize a special event.

2. Training
– once you have identified what they want, deliver it by training.  Training does not have to be costly it can be done on a mentoring one on one basis.  Find an expert in the field and ask for their time to develop your team.  People will give time. On line training is another option.   Allow your team time to train.

3. Change routine.
Change the meeting times and places, change the reporting format, change who will run the meetings, who will write the reports.  Make it interesting.

4. Value your team.
Reward the best performance by giving a small prize. Throw a party just to say “Thanks”.  Buy a round of drinks on Friday night in the pub.

Motivated teams will bring project success.
