What makes a good Project Manager?

April Showers

It's raining, it’s pouring, it’s flooding - with what?  CVs!  Do you need an umbrella?  It’s impossible to ignore the current economic situation and all the employment difficulties.  But you have a job to fill.  You're looking for an expert project manager.  You advertised a few weeks ago and you are now flooded with CVs.

You need to be able to sort through these CVs and pick the best.  But what is the best?  What makes a great Project Manager?  Some of characteristics of a great project manger are;

1. Communications skills – the ability to communicate clearly and effectively to different audiences who require different information is essential.  The project manager is the core – all information needs to be disseminated from them and only them.  A communication plan is a must.

2. Organization skills
– your project manager needs to bring the project in on time and to budget.  They must know how to prioritize tasks, know what’s going on, on a day to day basis, know the impact of any delayed or unfinished tasks while keeping an eye on the budget at all times.

3. Leadership skills
– They must inspire confidence in their team, motivate them and lead them.  They must be able to understand the needs of the team, build trust and respect among the team to achieve the results required.

4. Tenacity
– they must have the ability to get things done, have determination, persistence and the guts to follow through.  The ability to get down to the nitty gritty detail and the ability to see the big picture is vital.
